This visitor center is located on the edge of Penn State University’s Main Campus, in the shadow of Beaver Stadium. While not a LEED Certified project, the University considers this to be one of the first green buildings on the main campus. The building was carefully integrated with its site design using native plantings and innovative stormwater strategies including porous paving, bio-swales, and infiltration trenches. The HVAC system uses the constant temperature of treated effluent from a nearby sewage treatment plant to supply heat pumps and provide a very energy efficient system. Much of the building is constructed of local materials including limestone, brick, and wood. The facility received a Growing Greener grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Muscoe Martin served as Principal-in-Charge of this project while with the firm Susan Maxman & Partners, Architects.
